The Musical Member of our family

When we were at the Chicago airport last winter, we were window shopping. If anyone would've told me that I'd have to buy a pair of 'super awesome' headphones, I'd have laughed at them. But that is what happened, cos our 61/2 yr old son, Yash decided what he wanted most was one pair of headphones. Through the long flight back, through the cab ride home and couple of days after our return home we could see him play his favourite songs over and over in a loop on his iPad and listening over his headphones.
Yash loves music!

From when he has been a baby, Yash would respond to music in any form. His dad's whistle, or a commercial on TV that became a favourite, a lullaby that I used to sing, all left an impact on him. As he grew up, it was evident that he enjoyed music. Father and son duo would listen to dad's favourite songs, talk about the music director and the singer. How wonderful! He was able to learn and sing easily. He loved it when we would want to parade his skills in front of any willing audience. He would stand and belt out the songs with passion and confidence. Not that he had the voice of a nightingale, but his understanding of the song was clear.

He soon started recognising music. When we are shopping together, he has often stopped me in my tracks to tell me which was the song playing in the background. And, yes, that was followed by head bangs and tapping feet.

Thankfully, his school also encourages music. I was delighted that there would be regular classes of western and Indian classical music. These classes explored various musical instruments, songs of different languages and just plain old rhythm. They have given him a tremendous introduction to music and I am thankful to his school, Pramiti for that. During the music day at his school, he was asked to choose what he wanted to perform on. Yash, not surprisingly chose to sing, dance AND play an instrument.

Made cuter with the gap in his teeth!
Today he has a preference in the radio station that we play while in the car. He listens to the songs and wants to download them. He even made his dad download shazam so he could easily identify the music to download it.

I hope that his tryst with music continues as me and my husband both believe that our days are beautiful for the presence of music in it.
