Saving the artist in your child!

Last week, we got to attend the 'Parent - Adult - Interaction' at my son's school. My son Yash is almost 10 years old now. The experience was fantastic and we came home feeling satisfied with his growth and development, once again our confidence in our choice of school for him was reiterated. The art teacher showed us his paintings and told us something, that has got the educator in me, thinking. She said that his paintings were really good, with bold usage of colours, confident strokes (reminded me of Taare Zameen Par 😜 ). However, she added that he is not confident of himself as an artist, and felt that his initiation into art has been wrong. He thinks pencil and pen rather than colours (paints) and brush. She said that he was probably introduced to art as 'colour within the lines', 'fill the picture with colours' and other similar activities that did not do him any good. This is true at most schools and homes. In the name of art, we make ...

My Daddy Strongest!

I have to admit that my 9 year old son, Yash is quite the papa's boy. Father and son are inseparable. At first i'm green with envy that I may never have that special a bond between me and my son. But then, I realise, what I have is a great family bonding and we work, playing out our roles perfectly. What I have with Yash is pretty special too, I guess:) I thank my luck, every day, for having such a wonderfully loving father and son duo. I have seen Yash revere every single action of his dad. This father's day, I felt I could recount the top 5 reasons why he is a superhero to Yash. Super Power 1 - Hypnotic Stories  Yash has had the pleasure of listening to his dad recount the million, gazillion stories from his own life, when he was a child. Daddy dear uses stories as a way of reconnecting with the past, helping Yash to understand his roots. These stories often shape Yash's behaviour as they are practical and personal. I'm myself, still caught in a tran...

Mighty Girls and Spirited Boys, what's the difference?

Yash at a tea estate, picking tea. My almost 8 year old son, Yash, has recently acquired friends from the opposite gender. These two lovely girls are now part of a gang of 4 spirited boys. As I get a first class view of their behaviour and activities, the little girl in me lives again! It has been wonderful to see the influence of these girls on the boys :) The valentine's day that just passed, got a lot of attention from this gang. Few days before the 'Day', I heard murmurs that the day was about LOVE! It was in hushed voices and so my curiosity was naturally heightened. On the 13th of Feb, I was pleasantly surprised that the kids were planning for surprising their parents on Valentine's day with a home made chocolate. I caught them on a scavenger hunt for the ingredients from each of the kids' homes. Since the whole plan was revealed to me (basically, I spied;), my kitchen became their lab.  From this entire interaction, I understood that the ide...
